Young Carers Norfolk Referral Form 2015

Young Adult Carer Referral Form

Young and Young Adult Carers: The picture in Norfolk

  • In 2010 the BBC in a detailed research project estimated that there are  at least 12,000 Young Carers in Norfolk
  • 5,500 Young and Young Adult Carers were reported through the 2011 census,  but most professionals believe this to be a significant under representation as many young people  and their family do not realise they are carers
  • Currently only 300-500 Young Carers receive support through a mixture of County Council funded projects and local fundraising efforts

The impact on Carers:

Children’s Society Hidden from View in 2013 which reports that:

  • Young carers have significantly lower educational attainment at GCSE level – the equivalent to nine grades lower overall than their peers
  • The average annual income for families with a young carer is £5,000 less than families who do not have a young carer
  • Young carers are more likely than the national average to be ‘not in education, employment or training’ (NEET) between the ages of 16 and 19
  • Despite improved awareness of the needs of young carers, there is no strong evidence that young carers are any more likely than their peers to come into contact with support agencies
